Cherry rocked
Some welcome to the Big Leagues. Rocky Cherry was credited with the loss last night as he gave up a homer in the 12th inning in his Major League debut. It was a rough loss, as the Cubs bats were active early but then seemed to leave the park. The bullpen could once again not hold a lead. At least the defense couldn’t be faulted, with a couple of beautiful plays made in the outfield to save runs.
Pinella made full use of his bench, so much so that he needed to use Jason Marquis to pinch hit in the 12th inning with the tying run on second base. Marquis isn’t a bad hitter for a pitcher (.300), but he struck out on three pitches. The Cubs just seemed to run out of gas. It was their second extra-inning game in a row but it’s time to dig deep and start winning these close ones.
Cherry was brought up to pitch from AAA because fifth starter Wade Miller was put on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms. Looking on the bright side, at least it’s not arm trouble. We’re not so lucky with Mark Prior. He will undergo exploratory surgery today to see what’s wrong with his shoulder. Shoulder surgery is more serious than elbow surgery, so his entire career could be riding on the results. Off the field, still no update on Ron Santo’s condition. Please continue to send healthy vibes to the Cubs organization, as they seem to need more every day. Lou is going to blow a gasket soon if these results continue.
