One for the road

The Cubs finally managed to beat the Padres 3-1, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 9th.  After starting the inning with two singles to the outfield, they scored the 2 runs without ever hitting the ball out of the infield again.  At least they avoided facing Trevor Hoffman again.

Marquis pitched a great game and truly deserved the victory, but it went to Lowry, who pitched a scoreless 8th.  A nice 1-2-3 9th by Dempster helped end the losing streak at 3 games and allowed the team to head off to LA on a good note.

Derrick Lee and the rest of the Cubs don’t have fond memories of their last trip to LA.  Despite winning 2 of 3 from the Dodgers, Lee was in a collision with Raphael Furcal at 1st base and broke his wrist.  That was the beginning of the end for the Cubs’ season.  Let’s hope this year the Cubs can get in and out of town without injuries, but I’d still take the 2 out of 3 wins!
