Lee and Ramirez watch their teammates get the job done

I’ll be honest and say that I was a little apprehensive when I heard that neither Lee nor Ramirez was in the line-up today. Of course, after the run production in today’s 12-1 victory, I say let Lee serve his five game suspension (and rest that ankle). Ramirez also deserves an occasional day off, especially after a night game. It seems this team has enough depth, and heart, to get the job done with whatever players Lou tosses together that day. Maybe bringing in a veteran catcher was all that was needed to light a fire under Koyie Hill’s butt. Whatever it was, it worked.

What impressed me even more than scoring 12 runs without any home runs was the ten walks that the Cubs drew! Some of that credit must go to SF’s pitchers, but even my buddy Jacque took two walks.

Getting a large lead was also key on such a muggy day. It allowed Big Z to rest after just 5 innings and still get his NL-leading 12th victory. Even larger in my book was that Sean Gallagher managed to pitch the remaining four innings, gave up only one run, and saved our bullpen for another day. Gallagher, 21, is currently the youngest guy on the Cubs roster. With the possibility of Dempster being reactivated on Friday, Gallagher made a strong case for staying up here. If he does go back to Iowa, I don’t think it’s the last we’ve seen of him.
