Zambrano signs 5-year contract

Hot off the wires, Carlos Zambrano has agreed to a 5-year contract with the Chicago Cubs that will pay him $91.5 million. That’s about what he would have gotten on the free agent market and he wanted to stay a Cub. The contract averages out to Barry Zito money ($18 million annually). I doubt that Big Z will turn into the bust that Zito has been this year. The deal includes a $5 million signing bonus and a full no-trade clause. There is also a vesting option for a sixth year at $19.25 million.

We can only hope that the new contract will turn Zambrano’s game around. He’s got a big start Sunday night versus the Cardinals. I’ll be at the park, which is good since ESPN high-jacked the game and I don’t have ESPN at home.
