Tonight could be the night…
Even with the Cubs losing three in a row to the Marlins (I’d call them the lowly Marlins but they certainly didn’t play that way), the Cubs have a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs tonight. With a magic number of 2, a Cubs win combined with a Brewers loss tonight is all it takes. We’ll have Maddux and Barrett, two ‘Cubbies-at-heart,’ playing for San Diego tonight as the Padres look to beat the Brewers for a second straight night. The Padres are playing for their playoff lives, so we know they won’t be holding back. Then again, Florida certainly didn’t lay down for us just because they’re out of it, so I don’t expect Cincinnati to let up either.
From phone calls, e-mails and comments on this blog, I understand that many of you are more than a little nervous right now. Did you really think the Cubs were going to make this easy on us? Just keep believing, continue to cheer, go ‘all in’ and take the chance that you might get your heart crushed once again.
A friend of mine is from Cleveland and is thrilled that they’ve locked up a spot already. She is very worried that the Cubs and Indians might meet somewhere down the line, and she’s become quite the Cubs fan while living here. She says that that would be her worst nightmare. I tried to explain that she couldn’t lose in that scenario, but she doesn’t want to have to pick one team over the other. I can only hope she’s put in that spot…
