Digging up Wrigley’s field
Yesterday the Cubs started digging up Wrigley Field in order to put in a new drainage system. It’s a shame that they had to waste all that new sod that they laid in order for the field to be in decent shape for the playoffs. One game was played on it before it was ripped out. Maybe they can save it and relay it later.
The head groundskeeper for the White Sox is in charge of the project, as this seems to be his specialty. He did it for Fenway Park last year. Maybe this new drainage system is what the Cubs need to push them over the hump finally. If only it was that easy… I just hope they don’t mow the new grass in any stupid designs. I find the Fenway infield, which has two ’socks’ styled in the grass, to be very distracting.
It’s been stated that the new field will be 1 1/2 feet lower than the old field. This would allow space to add extra rows of seats, but with limited foul territory, I don’t see that happening. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the warning track and the ivy. I’ll be heartbroken if they kill the ivy. I’ll try to keep you informed as I look for more info.
My belated condolences to Cleveland fans everywhere. At least you lost it on the road in very hostile territory. The ‘03 Cubs had a 3-1 lead too, but lost Games 7 & 8 at home. There’s always next year.
