Looking back at .500

It hasn’t been pretty the last two days, but winning ugly is still a win. At least the Cubs are finally showing they can win the close ones. A blow-out every now and then would save our bullpen and possibly keep Santo from having a heart attack before May.

I was at Sunday’s game at Wrigley. The defense was poor, but the bats came through when they needed to and the pitching was strong. Today in Pittsburgh the Cubs managed to blow a seven run lead, yet came back to win 10-8 in 12 innings. Lou managed the bullpen well as he had Marmol left to close it out. He didn’t want to use Wood, as he had pitched (and earned saves) in the last two games. The Pirates were down to their last relief pitcher in the 12th, so they had no choice but to stick with him even when he walked five batters (two intentionally).

The Cubs have a day off tomorrow to celebrate their first official winning streak (3 games), being over .500 for the first time this year and winning their first extra inning game. The players could also use some rest after playing an almost 5 hour game today. I myself am hoping for less excitement the next game.
