Big Z Meltdown

Zambrano gave up seven runs on thirteen hits, both season highs, in today’s loss to the Dodgers. One positive was that he at least went 6 2/3 innings and didn’t cause Lou to go too deeply into the bullpen. The only other positive about today’s game was that it was a day game. We didn’t need to lose sleep as well as lose the game.

Not only did Big Z lose it on the mound in the 7th inning, but he totally imploded once in the dugout. The water coolers seemed to take the brunt of it, but I certainly hope Zambrano realizes how easily he could hurt himself by throwing these tantrums. I read somewhere that there was a hole recently in the wall near his locker at Wrigley. He had apparently been frustrated with his performance and put his fist through the wall. At least he used his non-pitching hand, but still. Acts like that should at minimum take the guarantee out of his contract.

The bats woke up a little today, but still not enough offense to avoid a second loss in a row. The Cubs are the only team in the Major Leagues who have yet to lose more than two games in a row. Let’s keep that alive by winning on get-away day. It’s always nice to win going into an off day anyway.

So I just shifted from Welly to Auckland, and finally have fast WiFi for the first time, meaning I can stream video. And the first one I saw was Zambrano melting down. That took me back.
